Research fellow (PhD candidate) in marine microbiology
A 3-year position as research fellow is available within the field of marine microbiology at the Department of Biology (http://www.uib.no/bio/en). The position is funded by EU through the ERC Advanced Grant: ”MIcrobial Network OrganiSation (MINOS). Self-similarity as an organizing principle in complex marine microbial food webs”, coordinated by Professor Frede Thingstad. The PhD research fellow will be affiliated to the research group Marine microbiology( http://www.uib.no/rg/mm) at Department of Biology.
Applicants must have achieved a master’s degree or equivalent in marine biology/ microbiology/biology or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment can be made.
The research fellow shall work with predator/prey interactions. We are seeking a motivated candidate with relevant education in marine plankton biology and ecology and with a potential to become researcher. Experience in experimental biology and with culturing of planktonic organisms (preferably micro- or mesozooplankton) is an advantage. Practical training with methods for detection and quantification of planktonic organisms (i.e. microscopy, flow cytometer) is also relevant.
The research will include experimental work in laboratory and field. The applicant must be able to work independently and in a team. The applicant must also be able to express him/herself well in English (spoken/written).
The research fellow must take part in the University's approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in collaboration with the research group. The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as research fellow.
The teaching language will normally be Norwegian.
Starting salary on grade 48 (code 1017/pay framework 20.8) in the Civil Service pay grade table scale, following ordinary meriting regulations.
