Mechanisms of probiotic bacteria and development of new concepts for treatment with probiotics
We are searching for a new PhD student to join the Gastrointestinal Microbiology group at the Department of Microbiology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala. Bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals have a great impact on health and disease, and the use of probiotic bacteria have been shown to in some situations be able to prevent and treat different gastrointestinal related disorders.
Our research focuses on ecology, genetics and physiology of probiotic lactobacilli and aims to an increased understanding how those bacteria could be used for improving the health on humans and animals. The research area thus comprise a number of different disciplines and the project also offer cooperation with medical scientists and biotech industry.
The aim with the PhD student project is to increase the knowledge on how probiotic bacteria influence the gastrointestinal tract, but also how probiotic products could be made more efficient and also have an effect on problems where probiotics earlier have failed to yield an effect. The work will mainly be conducted in a research-intensive environment in the new BioCenter at the Ultuna campus in Uppsala.
As a PhD student you will also take part in teaching.
Qualifications
The applicant should hold a university degree in biology, biotechnology or similar. Knowledge of microbiology is central, as well as general molecular biological skills. Basic knowledge of human/animal-physiology, ecology, bioinformatics and statistics are further merits. Personal qualities such as ability to cooperate with others will be considered. Good written and spoken English is required.

A person has basic eligibility for third level education if he or she has taken a second level qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second level.
Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 Higher education credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
