Post doc position in molecular biotechnology

KTH in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes architecture, industrial management and urban planning. There are a total of just over 15,000 first and second level students and more than 1,600 doctoral students. KTH has almost 4,300 employees.

The School of Biotechnology at the Royal Institute of Technology offers a curriculum that reflects the multidisciplinary nature of Biotechnology, integrating theoretical and applied science in undergraduate and graduate courses. The school has nine departments with about 220 employees. The biotechnology research within the school is internationally well recognized.

The ”Chemical Protein Engineering” research group at the Division of Molecular Biotechnology works primarily with chemical modification of proteins and development of affinity-based protein analysis methods. The group has an open position in a multidisciplinary project, aiming at the development of biosensor-based methods for the analysis of circulating tumor cells.

Responsibilities

The aim of the project is to develop new technologies for electrical detection of biomarkers by using functionalized nanostructures in silicon. The job involves production and characterization of biomolecules, coupling of proteins to sensor surfaces, analysis of the surface properties of the sensor chip by e.g. fluorescence microscopy, and performing electrical detection experiments, incl. data analysis. The job may involve supervision of PhD students and Master’s Thesis students in the project.

Desired qualifications

The successful applicant is expected to have a doctoral degree in biotechnology, biochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, or a related subject. The applicant should have experience from bioconjugation techniques for functionalization of biomolecules with e.g. fluorophores, or immobilization on e.g. glass, gold or silicon surfaces. The applicant should have knowledge of protein-protein interaction analysis, for examples by SPR-based biosensor analysis or protein array technologies. The applicant should be well acquainted with different protein analysis methods, such as mass spectrometry. Experience from characterization of surface properties by CAM, AFM and ellipsometry is valued. Experience of solid phase peptide synthesis, as well as recombinant protein expression and purification, is also valued.  The applicant should have good communication skills and be good at presenting both orally and in writing.
