Post-doc/Researcher position (at least one): Attachable biomedical sensing devices, topical drug delivery and responding biointerfaces (skin/mucosa)

About Malmö University
Malmö University offers almost 100 education programmes and 500 courses. Most of our programmes are vocational and interdisciplinary, especially our multidisciplinary research programmes. We are committed to diversity in employment and take a critical approach to knowledge and the impact of globalisation. Malmö University has about 25 000.

About Faculty of Health and Society (HS)
The education and research activities in the Faculty of Health and Society aim at contributing to the knowledge base in order to preserve, support and promote people’s physical, psychological, and social health. Research is taking place in areas ranging from science, technology and medicine to social science. At the interfaces between them, exciting new areas for research are being generated. Post-graduate study is currently expanding rapidly. Growing numbers of post-graduates are being enrolled, more scientific tutors and tutors with research backgrounds are being recruited. From January 1st the faculty consists of five departments, among them the Department of Biomedical Science, and a Faculty Office.

Research environment
The major part of the research at the faculty takes place in the two research and educational profiles "Biological interfaces” and "Health and social conditions in a life cycle perspective”. The position will be active in Biological interfaces, which has focus on the interplay between materials, biomolecules and cells at molecular, nano, micro and macroscopic level. The research at the faculty is also linked to the research programme Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces (www.mah.se/biofilms) which combines research with medical, dental, food and environmental applications, at three faculties/schools, in close collaboration with regional industry.

Post-doc/Researcher position: Attachable biomedical sensing devices, topical drug delivery and responding biointerfaces (skin/mucosa)
The focus of the current position is to carry out research work to gain further understanding on how biological interfaces, like skin and mucosa, respond to external factors. With a mechanistic insight in how these responses affect solute permeability over such interfaces we may facilitate topical drug delivery as well as detection of excreted endogenous marker molecules. A long-term objective of our research is to develop different platforms of attachable wireless biomedical devices with referencing technologies for robust sensing, controlled drug delivery and other types of health care services with enhanced reliability, safety and security.

The post-doctoral position is intended to interact in three of our research projects funded by the Knowledge foundation (www.kks.se):
1. Devices for non-invasive biomedical sensing, monitoring or/and delivery
2. Mucoadhesion – A prerequisite or a constraint in nasal drug delivery?
3. Humectants and their effects on skin barrier function – a mechanistic approach

The research will be carried out in close collaboration with our industry partners in these projects, i.e. YKI AB, ACO Hud Nordic AB, Eviderm AB, Q-Med AB, Bioglan AB, Nares AB, Galenica AB, Novosense AB and Layerlab AB.

Apart from carrying out research within these areas the applicant is expected to take responsibility for the maintenance of the instruments involved and to be active by supervising postgraduate students and fellow scientists in the techniques and participate in teaching at post graduate and graduate level. Teaching at undergraduate level may also to some extent be required. In addition, the applicant should (when applicable) be responsible for contacts on operational level with involved industry partners and is also expected to contribute in attracting external funding to support the project activities.

Required Qualifications and Criteria for Assessment of Applicants
Candidates must have demonstrated scientific competence corresponding to a doctoral degree. General competence in the research fields relevant to biomedical methods and technology, more specifically in pharmaceutics/surface chemistry/physics/electrochemistry, is advantageous. Special emphasis should be given to scientific competence and expertise in and previous hands-on experience at least in one of the following methods: in vitro diffusion methodology including assaying, electrochemistry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, sorption calorimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, confocal Raman spectroscopy, rheology, QCM-D and microscopic techniques (e.g. SEM, AFM).
