Assistant or Associate Professorship in English Translation Studies
The Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Copenhagen University, Denmark, invites applications for an assistant or associate professorship in English with a focus on translation between English and Danish. The position should be filled by 1st of August, 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The successful applicant must document research in Translation Studies and be absolutely fluent in both English and Danish.
The Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies teaches and conducts research into language, literature and society in Western Europe, Australia, the USA, Canada, Latin America and parts of Africa. The Department is a dynamic environment with a high level of personal interaction and a wide range of functions. It currently employs approx. 150 members of staff.
Job content
An assistant professorship is a three-year, fixed-term academic position involving research and teaching. The person appointed to the post will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching devised especially for assistant professors, and is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the Department, including examinations and administration. At the end of the three-year period, provided the appropriate funding is secured, a post as associate professor will be advertised for which the assistant professor may apply.
An associate professorship is a permanent position. The associate professor is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the Department, including examinations and administration, and also manage research projects, provide pedagogic supervision, supervise assistant professors and participate in academic assessment panels.
The position involves research, teaching and supervision in subjects related to translation in general and to translation between Danish and English in particular. The successful applicant must be able to
1) teach and supervise in both Danish and English;
2) teach practical translation and Translation Studies as well general English Linguistics at BA level;
3) teach and supervise students of Translation Studies, English and Contrastive Linguistics at MA and PhD levels,
4) contribute actively to the department’s cross-linguistic programme, the Translation Profile, at MA level;
5) contribute to and interact with other areas of research and teaching at the department, and
6) take part in all departmental activities, including administration and examinations.
Applicants must document research and teaching qualifications in Translation Studies and must document proficiency in English and Danish at the highest level. Knowledge of some of the other languages taught at the department (German, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese) will be an advantage, as the successful applicant will be encouraged to take part in interdisciplinary collaboration in the department, notably in relation to the Translation Profile.

Qualification requirements
With regard to the position as assistant professor, the applicant must have a Ph.D. or its equivalent within the area advertised. Furthermore, applicants who have teaching experience at university level will be at an advantage.
When appointing a candidate to the post as associate professor, the applicant must have research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved as part of successful employment as an assistant professor.
The following professional qualifications and personal competences are furthermore required:
· Research qualifications, which will be assessed in relation to the period of active research, the degree of originality and the academic output.
· The applicant’s scientific record, academic breadth and depth, rigour, thoroughness and accuracy, as well as academic relevance in relation to the advertisement for the position.
· Teaching qualifications.
· Administrative qualifications.
· Research management.
· Participation in networks – national and international.

Applicants may choose a maximum of five publications for assessment, of which at least three of the selected works must have been published within the five years immediately preceding the deadline for applications. Publication dates must be clearly marked on the publication list. The publications selected must be uploaded as attachments and named from 1 to 5.
Only material in English, German, French, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish will be assessed.
All material will be shredded at the end of the appointment procedure.
Appointment procedure
After the application deadline, the Dean will set up an expert assessment committee to evaluate applicants specifically in relation to the advertised position. The applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each candidate will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment relating to him or her before the appointment is finalised. Salary and conditions of employment
The post will be filled according to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
