PROJECT 2: Strategic research for the development of sustainable bivalve shellfish industry on the Swedish West coast

BACKGROUND

The ecological conditions for farming of bivalve shellfish on the Swedish west-coast are excellent. While culture of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is an established industry on the Swedish west-coast, the development of an industry around the more valuable native European oyster, Ostrea edulis has only started. Despite the proven high quality of the produce from these areas, its ecological ”friendliness” (no addition of food or nutrients, extraction of nutrients from eutrophicated areas and alternatives to fishing as a source for omega-3 rich food etc.) and potential economic growth in rural 5/16

areas food, there are ecological and socio-economic obstacles for the development of bivalve shellfish aquaculture on the Swedish West coast. In this project, two strong research environments at GU (School of Business, Economics and Law [Handelshögskolan] and Department of Marine Ecology [ME]) are joining forces in a multidisciplinary approach to assess the potential for development of an ecologically and economically sustainable bivalve shellfish industry and importantly additional benefits through development of an associated food tourism business. The research will be led by Ass. Prof. Mats Lindegarth (ME) and Prof. Lena Mossberg (Handelshögskolan).

Important aims of the research are to analyse:

1. How can we develop sustainable use of bivalve shellfish through fishing or farming?

2. Which are the opportunities and obstacles from a food tourism perspective? ful algal blooms in the Arabian Sea.
